USA Hospital Department Civil War Surgery Set by Dietrich W Kolbe

This example is a mahagony cased brass bound four tier field set with double sliding military latches. The brass plaque is missing but would have been inscribed USA Hospital Department. Instruments are marked Kolbe/Phila and both large bone forceps are marked USA Hosp. Dep’t. It contains the usual instruments expected for field use in war-large amputation knives, capitol saw, urethral sounds and urinary catheters, trephine, bullet forceps and probe. The bullet forceps have a open earlier design for the index finger. The total instrument count for the set is 47.

'A Tooth For An Eye' from The Knife's forthcoming album 'Shaking The Habitual' released on 8/9 April. Available to pre order here:

'A Tooth For An Eye' deconstructs images of maleness, power and leadership. Who are the people we trust as our leaders and why? What do we have to learn from those we consider inferior? In a sport setting where one would traditionally consider a group of men as powerful and in charge, an unexpected leader emerges. A child enters and allows the men to let go of their hierarchies, machismo and fear of intimacy, as they follow her into a dance. Their lack of expertise and vulnerability shines through as they perform the choreography. Amateurs and skilled dancers alike express joy and a sense of freedom; There is no prestige in their performance. The child is powerful, tough and sweet all at once, roaring “I'm telling you stories, trust me”. There is no shame in her girliness, rather she possesses knowledge that the men lost a long time ago.

Music: ‘A Tooth For An Eye’ by The Knife taken from the album ‘Shaking The Habitual’
Dir. Roxy Farhat & Kakan Hermansson
DOP: Aida Chehrehgosha

Shapes of Conscious

With this sketchbook, I’ve been challenging my creativity by starting first with a simple shape, drawn without the end goal in mind. Once the shape is drawn, I go about filling it with a character that develops a story of its own. The idea here is to get out of my own way, to let the drawing develop itself without forcing it into a desired narrative or purpose.
